Dundee Blues Bonanza 2009

Pheeew 10 hours of driving today (4 yesterday + a ferry) and I am back home with everything except for a right rear mirror knocked of by some dizzy truck driver who forgot what lane he was supposed to stay in at a road works strip between Bremen and Hamborg.

I really enjoyed beeing a part of this years Bonanza and the jam with the double lap steel challenge + a drummer is now taken up - Next year (Son!! YOU HEAR ME over there in Aberdeen ?) All the way back I have made up lots of ideas for another Head to Head lapsteel meet up in Dundee - Son I am on! Next year then. Expect it to be loud, dirty, old fashioned and a lot of fun.

Son Henry and Yours truly head to head in a lapsteel jam

Yours truly backed by a fearless young drummer - It was a lot of fun I really enjoyed this jam
Hell this might even get me out of my "One Man Band Coma" - who knows? But really a great festival

From my set at Dexters friday - where I played for the Big Bonanza Launch Party

my sincerest thanks for having me this year  - See you all again next year

Dundee Blues Bonanza - gathering some great blues acts & events

DUNDEE BLUES BONANZA 15
FRI 26th SAT 27th & SUN 28th JUNE 2009

Please find below details of this years Dundee Blues Bonanza .
- an event that seems to bring so much enjoyment to so many  people .

The Dundee Blues Bonanza (DBB) is a free music festival held over 3 days, which is unique to the city of Dundee.  It takes place over 30 city centre venues within easy walking distance of each other.  Pioneered and successfully developed over the last 14 years by a voluntary committee, the DBB has been nurtured from modest beginnings to its present level, which includes a very healthy International element.
Sadly, due to financial cutbacks we have not been able to bring a major international act to Dundee this year.  However we have decided to join the Friday Extravaganza and the Sunday Party and make the Big Bonanza Launch on Friday to kick off the weekend.

JUNIOR BONANZA
The junior workshop this year is a co-ordinated effort between several factions and is hosted by Dick Wardell.  It will be held in Dexters, Castle Street on Sunday 28th June, where there are all the facilities for youngsters along and to be involved.
Dick Wardell is well known on the festival circuit throughout Europe and in fact took part in the very first Blues Bonanza 15 years ago.

PHOTO EXHIBITION
Internationally renowned photographer Dave Peabody’s exhibition is scheduled to be held in The Chambers of Commerce, Panmure Street, Dave’s theme will be blues festivals around Britain, and he is calling it UK Blues Now.  It is hoped that we can expect many of the photos he took last year in Dundee to be included.

BLUES WORKSHOP (11am Sat 27th, Social South Tay St)
Every year we choose a different location for the workshop. This year social in South Tay St is the host and as always we try to include some of our international musicians in the mix.

BIG BONANZA PARTY LAUNCH
Friday 26th June in Dexters, Castle St, 7.30pm till late
Due to the extreme financial difficulties experienced by everyone this year we have been forced to forgo our traditional policy of having an international headline act to open the Bonanza on Friday.
Instead, we are amalgating the usual Friday extravaganza with the Sunday party.
It will be held courtesy of Dexters in Castle St, where we can all enjoy the music of some of our international friends, including Jimmy C (Canada) and The Blue Dragons, The Blue Stripes, who are Australian, singer Kitto with her American drummer Bill Bryant, The Flaming Stratmen, fronted by Werner (Germany) and one man band Nikolaj Andersen from Denmark plus Australian Boogie Piano Jan Preston.
There will be the unavoidable cover charge, which includes a Free Blues Bonanza Programme.

ACOUSTIC SUMMITS
By Popular demand this year, there will be not one, but 2 Acoustic Summit venues where all Acoustic players can play together. It has been decided that the Venues most suitable are Ogstons in North Lindsay St and Deacon Brodies down Ward Rd, where a vocal pa plus 2 boom stands and mikes will be available in both venues. Have Fun!

ELECTRIC JAM (Approx 6.30pm Dexters, Castle St.)
The Electric Jam is again scheduled to be held in Dexters, where it was so successful last year.
All backing and pa will be provided by the venue and the master of ceremonies will be Alaskan born guitarist Son Henry.

Wellgate Press launch.
Fri 26TH 2PM June.
This will be held in the Wellgate centre in Dundee, and everyone is Welcome.
Live performances by Internationally acclaimed Boogie Woogie piano player ,who has played with all the Blues greats.
Graham Robinson, from Colne, has played many festivals and brings a wealth of Acoustic Blues to Dundee every year.
This will also be an opportunity to help raise some money, with the sale of programmes and also collection tins for the two Bonanza charities this year. The Teenage Cancer Trust and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Returned home after my succesfull Estonian tour

These where the gigs

Thursday, May 21 - Illegaard, Tartu, w/ Bullfrog Brown
Friday, May 22 - SEE Theatre, Haapsalu
Saturday, May 23 - Clazz, Tallinn
Sunday, May 24 - Glass Hall, Tallinn Song Festival Grounds, w/ T探nis M辰gi, Jaak Johanson etc.

Yeahh I guess The Ol..Missisippi River now runs through Denmark and aaall the way to Estonia.
Never saw it comming and just got carried away and washed up on the shores of Estonia along with my three stringers and e-fiddle, gigs and a OMB-workshop
Thanks to my distinguished bluesbrother Andres Roots aka Bukka I am still alive and well

Andres Roots aka Bukka wrote this about the thursday together with me:

Great night last night/late night last night  Nikolaj sure had everybody going - and he does such a mean 3-string cigarbox version of "Black Magic Woman"! ,

We also dragged him to a studio before the show and he played some killer 5-string violin for the next Bullfrog CD

And the story goes on.....

After having done my One Hour One Man Band/Cigar box guitar slide .. Workshop from 18-19 wich went really well ending up with two of my "students" on Guitars and me on E-fiddle for a jam in order to make sure they learned their lessons well I Got on stage around 21:00 and left the stage at around 01:20

Yeahh my One Man Band members were tired but extremely happy as was Rommy and the rest of the Audience .. As usual the show included beautifull (this time Estonian) girls dancing on stage on each side of the One Man Band, and thus even more animating the crowd ... sold enough cd..s and may actually allow myself to call it one more gig well done

From Thursday night in Illegaard - pics by Merle Madisson & Rando Kruus.

And the jam

and so the end came to my Estonian Blues Odyssee.

I played Clazz in Talinn three sets of One Man Band drums and Winebox guitar around 1:00 am the crowd hardly wanted to let me go - the usual sporting of innocent (well maybe NOT so innocent) young girls found the One Man Band crowded with entusiastic dancers (truth be told most of these girls danced with some other men - leaving me do my job - Play my heart out ;gu; ) went home around 2 am and slept until 9 Then went of to the Festival Ground Halls where I played as a participant in a charity concert for handicapped Estonian kids wich was arranged for me by the Danish Estonian Culture office in Talinn. So now I can say I have opened for some of the most well known Estonian pop artists

Anyway now I am back to gigs in Denmark, Bremen and later Dundee.

Ivar (journalist and bluesfan from Haapsalu) posted some nice pics of me showing the gig and workshop in Haapsalu go see for yourselves here Ivars Blog about blues and other stuff

Anyone who will please help me out on the Estonian language?

I found that even after 4 days in this country I still can..t speak, write or read anything - in Estonian....

Enjoy

Getting lots of Airplay at Blues N Boogie

Just recieved this from Jerry Inman who is gonna Air me seriously through his Internet Radio Blues ..N Boogie.

Hello my brother,

The mailman was kind today, and instead of delivering bills, he brought me your cds. i am encoding them now, and will get all tracks on the play list by tomorrow morning. Since the basic playlist is 600 tracks and 42 hours in length, it would be difficult to say when they will be played. But, tomorrow evening, 9 pm to midnight, Denmark time, I do a live broadcast "Blues Biscuits 'N Boogie Gravy", and Tuesday 3 am to 6am, Denmark time, another live broadcast, "Stormy Monday", and I will make sure many of your tracks are on those shows. I love the "Cranium" title!! Thanks so much for what you do for the blues, and the music, and so very proud to have you in the family. Hoping someday we may even be able to ride together!!

Take care my friend.

peace, love, light, and blues,

Jerry
